Background

Grancel Castle is the residence of the Liberlian Royal Family, beyond the northern quarter of the City of Grancel on the shore of Valleria Lake. The gates of the castle are reputed to never having been breached in its history.

Estelle and Joshua arrive in Grancel with the intention of delivering a message from Professor Russell to Queen Alicia, but the Intelligence Division's high alert prevents them from entering. After teaming up with Zin and Olivier, they manage to obtain an invitation to a banquet in the castle after winning the Martial Arts Competition, though Olivier is prevented from attending by Mueller Vander.

In the castle, they deliver 1st Lt. Schwarz's message to Head Maid Hilda, who helps them get an audience with the Queen by disguising Estelle and Joshua as maids. The Queen reveals that Colonel Richard has been planning a coup, taken Princess Klaudia as hostage among others, planning to marry her to an Erebonian prince and forcing her to abdicate the throne in favor of her nephew Dunan von Auslese, and asks the bracers to rescue the hostages being held in Erbe Royal Villa.

The two return to their quarters, with Zin helping avoid suspicion when interrogated by Captain Amalthea. Zin reveals he was asked by Cassius Bright to help with any possible incidents in his absence, and agrees to help the two prepare a plan together with the Bracer Guild and the Royal Guardsmen to assault the villa.

After successfully taking over the villa, the bracers begin a two-pronged assault on the castle to free the Queen herself. Joshua, Olivier and Zin infiltrate the castle through a secret passage from the sewers, opening the main gate for the Royal Guardsmen to enter, while Estelle, Scherazard and Kloe use an airship to land on the terrace directly.

The top team are able to defeat Captain Amalthea and Duke Dunan before finding 2nd Lieutenant Lorence guarding the Queen. Lorence unmasks himself and fights the three by himself, easily defeating them, but he simply leaves after revealing the name of "Hamel". Joshua's team arrives immediately after, and the Queen tells them that Colonel Richard is looking for the Aureole, one of the Sept-Terrions of legend, that he intends to use as a weapon.

The Queen leads them to the Treasury in the basement and opens it to reveal an elevator built recently leading to the Sealed Area. Agate, Tita and Professor Russell arrive and join the bracers in heading down the elevator while the Queen and Lieutenant Schwarz stay behind to cover them.

After defeating Colonel Richard and putting a stop to the coup, they are invited to a conglaturatory dinner in the castle, and Estelle and Joshua take a break in the city. While Estelle is buying ice cream, Professor Alba admits his identity to Joshua as Georg Weissmann and reveals that he's been spying on Cassius and the Bracer Guild for Ouroboros since he adopted him.

Estelle meets Joshua at the castle garden terrace after dinner, where he tells her the story of how a "magician" rebuilt him into an assassin after he was broken by the Hamel Tragedy, how he was sent to assassinate Cassius Bright, his plan to put an end to the magician, and gives her his harmonica. Estelle confesses her feelings, which prompts Joshua to kiss her and slip her a sedative, confessing his own feelings before she passes out.

After the Queen's Birthday celebrations, Grancel Castle is once again freely open for visitors, and the secret passage that led to the sewers has been sealed off.

Grancel Castle is one of the places that receive a threatening letter before the signing of the Non-Aggression Pact between Liberl, Erebonia and Calvard. Estelle interviews the Queen again, as well as Head Maid Hilda, who tells her about Renne's parents and how they acted suspiciously before abandoning her at Erbe Royal Villa. It turns out to be a diversion tactic by Renne herself, who had been manipulating the Intelligence Division remnants into experimenting with a Gospel on a tank and causing chaos in Grancel.

After Joshua and Estelle escape the Glorious together, they return to the castle for Joshua to confess his previous spying to Cassius and the Queen. Joshua is pardoned in exchange for his help and information about Weissmann's plans, and reports come in of the Tetracyclic Towers being enveloped in a mysterious aura while Ouroboros forces begin a massive assault over all of Liberl. While Cassius begins organizing the defense, the bracers are sent on the Arseille with now Captain Julia Schwarz to the towers to stop the Enforcers seen there.

Their efforts are in vain as the Gospels manage to disable the Towers' seal on the Aureole, and the Liber Ark reappears over Valleria Lake, beginning the country-wide Orbal Shutdown Phenomenon. After the bracers restore communications to the rest of guild branches, they're asked to return to the castle immediately, and on the way they spot Ouroboros airships heading towards the capital.

Bleublanc, Walter, Luciola and Renne lead an assault towards the castle, with the army being unable to stop them. Walter is able to destroy the castle gate with ease, and inside they're faced with the Royal Guardsmen, Duke Dunan and former Captain of the Guard Phillip Runall. Estelle, Joshua and the other bracers arrive to the castle shortly after, dispatching archaisms left behind by Ouroboros, and speak with the defeated Phillip and Dunan, who tell them that the Enforcers are heading for the Royal Quarters.

The bracers are able to confront the Enforcers while they're extracting the Queen and Princess Klaudia, and thanks to the unexpected arrival of Lt. Col. Cid and Alan Richard himself, who had been freed by Cassius together with the rest of the Intelligence Division remnants to serve as a surprise advantage against Ouroboros, they're able to fend the Enforcers off and rescue the Queen and the Princess.

Once Ouroboros' assault winds down, they're suddenly faced with the news that Erebonia has been massing steam-powered tanks in front of Haken Gate. Klaudia, who has made the decision to accept the responsibilities of Crown Princess, asks to lead the negotiations with the support of Estelle and the bracers, and sets off towards Haken Gate.

Background

Kevin, Ries, Tita and Julia head to the castle after finding themselves in Grancel after traversing the Jade Corridor. However, fiends ambush them and the castle gets locked behind a magical barrier, forcing them to explore the rest of the city beforehand.

After freeing Joshua from his Sealing Stone found in the Grand Arena, the castle's barrier disappears, and the group is able to enter, though the castle is once again empty. At the castle terrace they find Gilbert and rescue him from some fiends, but he is unable to provide any answers as to the state of the city or Ouroboros.

Beyond the Queen's room, they find a ghost of a woman, who entrusts a key to Kevin before fading. The key opens the Treasury at the bottom of the castle, where the elevator to the Sealed Area is once again in the state it was when the coup was ongoing.
