Gaolang (ガウラン) is a member of Heiyue's exiled Lai House introduced in Trails through Daybreak II.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Gaolang is a young man with short brown hair, lilac eyes and a muscly build. In contrast to other major characters associated with Heiyue who tend to have professional attire, Gaolang, reflecting his enthusiasm for combat, dresses in more casual clothing that displays the prominent tattoo on his arm. He wears a one-sleeved magenta martial arts uniform over a black sleeveless vest. The outfit is accented with black and gold. He also wears a matching sash, white belt and black slippers. Gaolang's tattoo is of a long coiling dragon from his hand to his shoulder.
Personality[]
He deeply enjoys combat and describes it as the only way to quench the hunger within him. While he is capable of being calm and collected, he is far less reserved and more inclined to brutality than other Heiyue members, and stated that he would be the one to kill Van's group when they first crossed paths.
Background[]
A martial artist from the East known as the foremost master of the Gekka style, one of the three major Eastern martial arts. Since there is no one who can match his strength, he is rumored to be the strongest Gekka warrior.[1]

In reality, Gaolang's name is Fen Lee and he is the younger brother of Cao Lee. Heiyue originally had nine houses, until the Lee House was destroyed by the Lai House twenty years prior to Trails through Daybreak II. Young children at the time, Fen and Cao were the only surviving members of the Lee family. While Cao was raised by Gien Lu in the Lu house, who knew the truth, Fen was kept within the Lai House. Initially he was kept as a hostage in case the Lai House's crimes were later exposed, but when his talent for martial arts emerged in later years, they instead began raising and using him as a warrior. To this extent and to protect his past, the Lai family gave him the false name of Gaolang, and had him rarely show his face in public. Cao eventually assumed Fen had been killed.
Gaolang was the lead martial artist serving the Lai family of Heiyue, but the family fell when the ties between the mafia organization Almata and the Lai family came to light. Within the turmoil, he kept the morale of the family in check and earned the respect of many Heiyue members, despite other family members being absorbed in their own intents.
Trails through Daybreak II[]
Following the Lai family's exposed cooperation with Almata during the events of Trails through Daybreak, a civil war within Heiyue emerged, and it was after said exposure that Cao learned the truth about his brother. The internal conflict, as seen during the game's Act II Part A, was in reality entirely orchestrated and manipulated by Cao behind the scenes, in a Machiavellian scheme to reinstate the Lee house and force the other Heiyue houses to recognize its authority. During said scheme, Van Arkride and his team first encountered Gaolang is passing during a martial arts side quest, and later formally in a cave used by the Lai Family; although initially overpowered thanks to Kasim Al-Fayed being among his opponents, Gaolang was able to turn the tides thanks to support by Shizuna Rem Misurugi (who, unbeknownst to Gaolang, was hired by Cao to protect him as a part of the scheme). Gaolang also powers himself up by means of the eighth Genesis fragment.
Later, when Cao revealed his intentions in a tower in Longlai to Van's group, Gaolang appeared to assist him. Later, Cao told Gaolang the truth about his birth when they were both on Nemeth Island, and asked Gaolang to accept his offer to head the Lee Family (so that Cao could, in line with his preferences, mastermind and manipulate events from behind the scenes). Gaolang later accepted Cao's offer when the two were in Edith, viewing it as a chance to continue satisfying his bloodlust.
He is last seen helping Cao, Gien and Ashen Lu fight off the coup d'etat attempt.
