Grimcat, Cat of the Illusory Night or Phantom Thief Grimcat (幻夜の猫(グリムキャッツ)) is a hereditary role passed down within the Lanster family. The current bearer of the role is Judith Lanster.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Grimcat's outfit is an extremely form-fitting cat suit of solid black with yellow accents. The suit sports two thigh-high clawed boots and elbow length claw gloves which leave the shoulders and upper bust exposed. There are a few armour plates but most of the figure's profile is left with only a thin form-fitting covering. Grimcat's hair colour is a bright flaming orange and yellow arranged in two twin tails held beneath a face mask resembling a cat's. Grimcat wields yellow glowing claws and a retractable whip acting as the tail motif. She can swing upon this tail and use it as a grappling hook.

While she is operating in another disguise, Grimcat does not change her personality much, only exhibiting her private side without care. Due to her personality in this form, her true identity can be easily deduced by keen or intelligent people she met before.

Background[]

Grimcats (Emblem)

Grimcat's Emblem

Grimcat is a phantom thief that fights for righteousness and against evil, stealing only to make a point. She is said to target corrupt politicians and officials, shady corporations and the rich. It is also said that once her calling card has been delivered, Grimcat has never failed to get to her target. In addition to her enhanced physical abilities, Grimcat can deploy a stealth concealment field to remain hidden and can perform stunts such as wall running.

The role of Grimcat has been passed down from daughter to daughter in the Lanster family, starting with Dominique Lanster before passing on to her daughter Chloe Lanster. Judith Lanster is the third and current generation of Grimcat. The family use a icon of a cat with a stylised 'G' on their calling cards, which present the text: il ne faut pas réveiller le chat qui dort or "We must not wake the sleeping cat".

Grimcat has enough of a reputation to have made the news, having been reported in the Tyrell Times and the police and CID actively trying to detain her. Judith says that she has worked on the character for years and believe in it just as much as she does her acting career. Salvatore Gotti views Grimcat as representing one of his '108 perfect forms of beauty' and Judith is worried about the very real possibility that he might make a movie about her one day.

Judith is a rival of the current Yin.

Trails through Daybreak[]

Grimcat makes the Tyrell Times as a theft of members of the Oración Trustee Bank are robbed and the authorities seek information. Van Arkride and the party encounter her in Edith and quickly deduce her identity, shattering their expectations and providing disappointment. They fight her until Grimcat threatens to use her full power, before realizing the time and running off. later, Van sees Judith promoting a film and after a quick conversation, immediately figures out her secret identity.

Grimcat appears once again in Tharbad, firstly accosting Van and Aaron when she thinks they are making Saara cry. She then appears in the Al-Jumeirah hotel 'after a certain actress' (herself) asked her to help. After being pinned down by drug-influenced security staff, and rescued by the party, she realises she cannot do it alone and temporarily teams up with the party to rescue the film stars and directors.

Grimcat appears once more when Judith uses her to fight off the Nue Cryptid near Longlai and again in the efforts to find Mare/Yumé. They face off against Shizuna Rem Misurugi and Arioch. In Oración, Grimcat tries to sneak up on Kasim Al-Fayed to claim his access keys but is spotted. It was part of a distraction to allow Feri Al-Fayed to accomplish this however. Whilst in the underground waterways, Judith and Rixia Mao greet each other, having known about each other's alter egos as rivals in the past.

Judith continues to use Grimcat in her time as part of the Arkride Solutions Office, and Van in turn helps her to find an imposter using her name to commit crimes. Judith ends up transforming into Grimcat in front of several acquaintances during the game's climax, but all swear to either keep it a secret or pretend they hadn't seen anything.

Kai no Kiseki: Farewell, O Zemuria[]

Grimcat the First is revealed to have received Grimcat's transformation tool, the Grim's Compact Mirror, as a present from Lillia Epstein and her adoptive mother Sheena Dirke when the Dominique was a wandering child. She lived with Claude Epstein's small family alongside Lillia, Sheena and Latoya Hamilton. She also inherited Sheena's revolutionary war song composed by Sheena and her compatriots in the past. When tragedy arrived in S.1154, Grimcat the First helped Lillia to hide and become Lillia Claudel. Dominique is one of the rare few who knew what role the Oct-Geneses were required to play in the possible future.

Trivia[]

  • The exact nature of Grimcat's abilities or source of her powers has not been revealed as of Trails through Daybreak. The form bears a similar resemblance to the shard combat form that Grendel possesses and the flash of the Genesis suggests a common link through it. The exact circumstances surrounding Judith's family bearing the role suggest more than just technology at work. The origin is later revealed in Kai no Kiseki: Farewell, O Zemuria.
