- 6/26 (Sat) Field Study at Nord - Day 1
- I woke up this morning dreading the eight-hour train ride ahead of me. The plan was to be in the highlands by the evening, but getting there wasn't going to be easy.
- Fortunately, when we were about to leave, Sharon announced that she'd packed all of us very tasty-looking breakfasts. Alisa wasn't sure how to react, but knowing I had something to eat on the long train ride ahead brightened my day. After that, we went straight to the station.
- At the station, we met up with Group B and we all bought our tickets.
- Both Group A and Group B boarded the train to Heimdallr and we all started into our breakfast. It was interesting to have everyone on one train.
- ...Laura and Fie seemed to be more than a little uncomfortable in each other's presence, though. Hopefully, that doesn't cause any problems for Group B on this field study...
- It wasn't long before we reached Heimdallr, and both groups went their separate ways. As we boarded a second train to Roer, I hoped that Group B would be able to handle what was going on between Laura and Fie.
- On the train, Gaius told us everything there was to know about the Nord Highlands. As the name implies, the highlands are a vast, open area of...high land. So high, in fact, that we needed to cross the Eisengard Range to the north of Roer to reach them. The highlands are also known for being the source of the Imperial Army's war horses, so Nord and Erebonia have historical ties.
- Once we arrived at Roer, we needed to cross to platform 4 to board yet another train.
- However, as we were changing platforms, we encountered none other than Sharon. Apparently, she'd taken an airship here, which allowed her to get ahead of us. Not only that, she came with packed lunches in tow, which we gladly accepted.
- It turns out she was in Roer on a request from Irina Reinford--her employer and Alisa's mother.
- Irina revealed that she, like Rufus, is a member of the academy's board of directors, and that's she also directly involved in the development of ARCUS and the orbal staff. Alisa was clearly upset that her mother had been one step ahead of her the whole time, but Irina paid her no mind and walked off to resume her work.
- We transferred to the train to Nord and started eating the lunches that Sharon had prepared for us. I do feel for Alisa, but our field study needs to be our main priority right now.
- After traveling through a countless number of tunnels, we finally reached Zender Gate, a military base at the southern edge of the Nord Highlands.
- There we were greeted by a storied lieutenant general known as One-Eyed Zechs. He was a Vander, part of the family who personally guards the Imperial family. His age didn't undermine his impressiveness one bit.
- He led us out of the fortress, and we were greeted by a spectacle beyond our imagination.
- After he gave us a map of the highlands and horses to ride, we agreed to ride off for Gaius' home to the northeast.
- We eventually came to a crossroads. We'd seen a lot of curious landmarks on our way, but we didn't have the time to admire them. We wanted to get to the settlement before sundown.
- We reached the settlement just as the sun set. There, we received a warm welcome from Gaius' younger brother, Thoma, his sisters, Lily and Sheeda, and his father and mother, Lacan and Fatma.
- They treated us to a nutritious dinner, and we felt the exhaustion of our long journey begin to melt away as we spent time with Gaius' wonderful family.
- Apparently, this region isn't without its fair share of political tensions, as Nord's positioned right between the Empire and the Calvard Republic. They tried to tell us not to worry, though...
- Lacan told us that he was the one responsible for choosing our field study tasks, but that he would give them to us tomorrow. Since it was getting late by then, we figured it was about time to turn in.
