This page explains the mechanics of status effects (状態変化) in Trails of Cold Steel III, Trails of Cold Steel IV and Trails into Reverie.

Overview[]

A status effect is any alteration that applies to units in combat, characterized by an icon above the unit on the field, and an icon above their stats display in the user interface. Only one application of a particular status effect can be active on a unit.

Various effects can be applied through the use of arts, crafts, equipped quartz that modify the user's attacks, or by enemy skills. Status effects are classified depending on how they affect the unit: stat modifiers are effects that directly increase or reduce the unit's stats (STR, DEF, ATS, ADF, SPD and MOV), while abnormal status are other types of effects that can be beneficial or detrimental. Detrimental abnormal statuses are also referred as ailments.

Stat Modifiers[]

Stat modifiers can be stacked positively and negatively up to 3 times (S, M and L) in each direction, with the duration of the effect being that of the latest modifier applied. This means if a ↑S effect for a stat is applied on top of an existing ↑M effect, it would result in a ↑L effect, while if applied on top of an existing ↓M effect, the result would be a ↓S effect.

Stat modifiers now take into account equipment or quartz stat increases when calculating the modification. However, each stat is modified by a different amount:

Duration[]

The duration of a status effect is determined by the type of effect and method of application. Most effects have a duration expressed in turns, but some effects are permanent until removed or the end of battle, or last only for a certain amount of attacks. Note that the turn to prepare an art will not count towards status effects' duration and the effect itself.

Status Vulnerability[]

Each enemy has a different set of vulnerabilities for each status effect (and stat reductions and AT Delay). The chance of inflicting a certain status effect is multiplied by the enemy's vulnerability to that status effect to obtain the final chance of inflicting it. The chance can go higher than 100%, making it more likely than usual to inflict that status effect. Player characters can resist status effects by equipping various pieces of equipment, which are guaranteed to resist the effect.

Delay Vulnerability[]

When a character has several sources of delay (from quartz and crafts) each source will roll the chance to apply according to the vulnerability independently of the others, meaning the total chance of applying delay is:
However, if successful, the delay applied will only be the craft's delay and the highest delay from quartz sources.

Same as sleep, but inflicts a random ailment when effect ends. Wears off, or until the character is attacked.
Faint (Sen III Status) Faint

Cannot act, takes critical damage from all attacks. Wears off.
Freeze (Sen III Status) Freeze

Cannot act.
Take 10-15% of max HP as damage after every turn.
Overwrites Burn.

Petrify (Sen III Status) Petrify

30% chance of instant K.O. if attacked.
Permanent until removed.
Confuse (Sen III Status) Confuse

Prevents control, attacks enemy and ally alike. Wears off.

Prevents control, attacks allies and helps enemies. Wears off.

Character cannot be targeted or damaged by enemy attacks.
Physical attacks are guaranteed to deal critical damage.
Wears off or until character attacks.
Insight (Sen III Status) Insight
心眼
Increases ACC% and EVA% by 50%, and unbalance chance by 10%. Wears off.
Brandish (Sen III Status) Brandish
剣閃
Attacks and crafts deal an extra hit with partial damage based on unmodified base damage. Wears off.
Craft Guard (Sen III Status) Craft Guard
物理防御
Immunity to physical attacks, crafts, and S-Crafts. Each hit blocked by this status reduces the duration by 1.
Craft Reflect (Sen III Status) Craft Reflect

Reflects physical damage (25%) back to the attacker. Each hit reflected by this status reduces the duration by 1.
Art Reflect (Sen III Status) Art Reflect
魔法反射
Reflects magic damage (25%) back to the attacker. Each hit reflected by this status reduces the duration by 1.
Guard (Sen III Status) Guard
完全防御
Immunity to all attacks. Each hit blocked by this status reduces the duration by 1.

Reflects any damage (25%) back to the attacker. Each hit reflected by this status reduces the duration by 1.
HP Regen (Sen III Status) HP Regen
HP回復
Recover a % of max HP each turn. Wears off.
CP Regen (Sen III Status) CP Regen
CP回復
Recover an amount of CP each turn. Wears off.
Unleash (Sen III Status) Unleash
覚醒
Grants Rean Schwarzer new crafts and clears and prevents ailments. Wears off.
Weak (Sen III Status) Weak
ウィーク
Same as Balance Down, and elemental weaknesses are increased by 50%. Wears off.
Scorch (Sen III Status) Scorch
劫炎
Take 45-55% of max HP as damage after every turn.
Overwrites Freeze, cannot be overwritten.
Wears off.
Berserk (Sen III Status) Berserk
The character's attack increases, but they become uncontrollable and use normal attacks every turn. 30% chance to be removed every turn.
Mark (Sen III Status) Mark
The next physical hit taken from Swin Abel's attacks or crafts is guaranteed to be a critical hit. Wears off, or until the character is attacked by Swin Abel.
Deathblow (Sen III Status) Deathblow
即死
Reduced to 0 HP instantly. One-time effect.
K.O.
戦闘不能
Can't battle.
All CP lost.
Permanent (even out of battle) until revived.
