Voices[]

Voices in Trails of Cold Steel can be found in the voice/ directory in the .vag audio format used by PlayStation games. The English PC release of Trails of Cold Steel uses the uncompressed .wav audio format instead. They are located in data/voice/wav/ in the game directory.

There are two groups of voice lines. There are 9450 lines in all releases of Trails of Cold Steel prefixed with e8v. They are in Japanese (in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese releases) or in English (in English releases). The English PC release of Trails of Cold Steel adds 4615 additional lines prefixed with pc8v. No version has both audio tracks.

The voices can all be logically grouped into what are called "sections" in this article, with essentially 1000 possible files in each "section". All files are named in the format e8v#####.vag (or e8v#####.wav and pc8v#####.wav), where the first two numbers can be used to identify the character and the rest to identify the file. For example, e8v00000.vag through e8v00999.vag would be the first "section" in this layout (and belongs to Rean Schwarzer).

Sections are further organized:

  • ...000 through ...199: Battle and repeated voices. This includes voices used in battle, cooking, on the field/overworld, cooking, fishing, horse riding, and Blade. This dialogue is not subtitled and is often heard a lot.
  • ...200 through ...299: Active voice. This dialogue is subtitled and can be found again in the notebook.
  • Starting at ...300: Story dialogue boxes. This dialogue is subtitled.
  • In the story section, starting at ...950 or some other higher range of numbers, always noted below: Generic story dialogue. This is often things like acknowledgements, grunts, and repeated lines. For example, Emma Millstein's "Stand, bow!" line is in here.
  • For two characters, disguises are separated out and begin at a different number. This is noted for those characters.
  • For NPC characters, they can be given three number identities and only take up 100 possible files, starting with the prefix e8v5 (for example from e8v50100.vag to e8v50199.vag is the second NPC Karno, one of the two voiced kids found in Lohengrin Castle).

Within these sub-sections, they are always sequentially numbered.
