A guiding light swallowed by the darkness, in an empire shrouded by its curse.
Filled with regrets that will never cease.
Plagued by questions that will go unanswered.
Unable to protect that which he held dear, lost in despair over mistakes that cannot be undone, he listlessly awaits his fate as a "Sacrifice."
This is what has become of Rean Schwarzer, the Ashen Chevalier.
As he sits in darkness, the world edges ever closer to its demise.
The Erebonian Empire, the country with the most powerful military in recorded history, is now poised to swallow up the entire continent under the banner of its largest invasion plan yet—Operation Jormungandr.
In response, the rest of the world rallies together in a last-ditch effort to fell this mighty serpent, no matter the cost.

- Rean Schwarzer: Biological son of Giliath Osborne, but raised by Teo Schwarzer after being abandoned. Burdened by a mysterious 'Ogre Power' deep within him, he turned to the Eight Leaves One Blade school to gain control over the power. After becoming the Awakener of Valimar, the Ashen Divine Knight and ending the Erebonian Civil War, he was hailed as imperial hero, the Ashen Chevalier. Following his graduating from Thors Military Academy and assuming office as instructor at Thors Branch Campus, he winds up imprisoned, unable to remember even his own name.
- Juna Crawford: Energetic girl from Crossbell, driven by her sense of justice and assumed the role of leader within New Class VII. She originally aimed to follow in Lloyd Bannings' footsteps by enrolling at the Crossbell Police Academy, but after Crossbell's annexation she decided to enroll at Thors Branch Campus.
- Kurt Vander: Handsome young man hailing from the prestigious Vander family in Erebonia, specialised in dual swordmanship. With the family released from their duty as guardians of the Imperial Family, he lost sight of his original goal and followed his brother's advice to enroll at Thors Branch Campus.
- Altina Orion: Also known as the Black Rabbit, she is known as a member of the Intelligence Division and a wielder of the combat shell Claiomh Solais. She served as Rean Schwarzer's support by the division's request, which led her to join him at Thors Branch Campus.
- Musse Egret: Bewitchingly elegant, she was born as granddaughter of Count Egret, an aristocrat in Ordis. Originally enrolled in St. Astraia Girls' School, she transferred to Thors Branch Campus as soon as its existence was announced.
- Ash Carbide: A delinquent raised in the slums of Raquel. Underneath his rough attitude his a talented young man and a literary lover. After transferring from Class VIII to VII, he found his own path forward.
Playable Characters[]
With a total of 39, this game had the largest amount of playable characters at the time of its release.
A number of characters have usable Brave Orders, but are themselves not playable in this game (all of them except KeA were playable in a previous game). These include KeA Bannings, Elise Schwarzer, Alfin Reise Arnor, Towa Herschel, Claire Rieveldt and Lechter Arundel.

Development[]
During the Nihon Falcom shareholder meeting on 20 December 2017, Falcom officially unveiled Sen no Kiseki IV for the PlayStation 4 for Fall 2018. A teaser website featuring four screenshots was launched alongside the announcement.
The game's cover art was revealed on 28 June 2018.
In their weekly update on 24 May 2018 Falcom announced that Sen no Kiseki IV would release on 27 September 2018. The company also revealed that the game would be released in a standard edition and an 'Eternal Edition' (永久保存版). The Eternal Edition contains, apart from the game, three books with the first three games' original scenario drafts ("Confidential Synopsis: Uncensored") and a physical message card from Altina Orion to Millium Orion, featuring a download code to obtain Altina's uniform from Trails of Cold Steel II.
